With its ancient story and solid form, mosaic can perpetuate the illusion of permanence. I play with this illusion, magnifying the hair-thin lines of ephemeral subjects—veins of a leaf or butterfly wings—then filling them with grout. I will never exhaust the metaphors possible with mosaic, through color, sheen and texture, nor tire of the embedded memories that recycled tesserae evoke. I am thrilled to make art with ceramics from the second-hand market or that would otherwise end up in the landfill. I find peace working with the pieces. And the meditative process reveals to me the meaning of each project; the themes of Fear, Impermanence and Empathy reoccur in my work.
